Exhibition of the Pļaviņas HPP and its history

The exhibition shows the history of construction and major milestones in the operation of the Pļaviņas HPP, a unique engineering and architectural structure. The Pļaviņas HPP differs significantly from power plants of a similar capacity – it is very compact and its water spillways and generation facilities are combined into a single unit, which is equipped with a tunnel for road transport – the only one in Latvia. In terms of the installed capacity, this is the largest hydropower plant in the Baltics and one of the largest in the European Union.

Visitors to the exhibition can get to know the uniqueness of the HPP, viewing both a model of the HPP and a variety of complex measuring devices and special tools necessary for the operation of the power plant, as well as a diving suit, various documents and photos showing the construction of the HPP, equipment in operation, reconstruction works, building of the town of Aizkraukle and social activities of workers.

In addition to the exhibition, a tour can be arranged to see the machine hall of the Pļaviņas HPP, learning the principles and features of operation of the hydropower plant, and also to view the HPP structures from a viewing area downstream the HPP building and enjoy a panoramic view from the top viewing area (on the side facing the reservoir).
